Good Morning.

If you were not aware, we are recording our second album this month. It seems to be going quite well. Wellington has been it's cold, grey and windy self for the past few weeks with the occasional nice day thrown in so we don't loose all hope of ever seeing the sun. At the moment Anita is having a go at recording some piano accordion for 'Sleep'.. we want it to sound slightly dark and melancholy.

MONDAY - The beginning.

On Monday we turned up to the studio a bit early and Lee was already there. The Surgery is this great building, with lots of of long passageways and rooms everywhere like a rabbit burrow..and it's really homely too. There are lamps everywhere so we have the lights off and the lamps on and it creates a rather nice ambience in the room.

Firstly we recorded 'Teatime' It's quite a slow sort of meditative sort of piece..The lyrics are about some guards who go to tea, and leave the jewels unwatched. I suppose it evokes images of the English gaurds and the crown jewels..but I don't think that was really what I had in mind at the time of writing.

The other songs we recorded that day were 'Following the Leader' which is a new one. It starts with the the verse..

'The town was lit up waiting,
streamers hung and balloons waving,
the factory was closed down for the day,
the sky was blue and serenading...'

We also recorded 'Even Gold' which is a slow, contemplative piece, and a very very short song yet to be named..

TUESDAY

On Tuesday Michael Cane and Tim Prebble ( Who are also in the band Spartacus R with Ben) came in and we recorded three tracks live, including 'Snakes' which is one of our oldest songs.

WEDNESDAY- Fireworks!

Recorded the last few songs to go on the album in the morning, before going to The Southern Cross to play.
After the gig we went up to Marmalade (slf) studio's to record grand piano for the song 'Seahorses' and watch the fireworks from the top of the building.

THURSDAY- Mighty Mighty .

Our friend Tui from Christchurch flew up on Wednesday night, so on Thursday we recorded all of her harmonies for the album, and consumed some cups of sage tea which she told us is good for sore throats. We also had a very short string practice with the trio we are having
play on four songs.

On Thursday night we played a show at Mighty Mighty with the lovely Rosy Tin Teacaddy. They sounded amazing, and had a violin and cello player along with them.
We had mystery sound problems for our set which were slightly off-putting, we believe it had something to do with a resonant frequency and somethingorother to do with the note B on my piano.

FRIDAY- is today.

Clarinets and Piano Accordion is on the agenda.

News from Brooke

Shall try and put some photo's up soon.

Hello,

I just thought I'd thank everyone who came to our show for coming...we had lots of fun. I am sorry about the last song, I thought I knew it. But it turns out I did not..

I suspect the concert will be the only one we will ever perform at The Great Hall.It was a beautiful room, and it was really quite brilliant to play the grand piano. But we probably shall never be able to afford to play there again, hehe.. So for those of you who came, I am glad you could be there.

Demarnia Lloyd played first, with a rather mesmerising yet quaint set.. She uses loop pedals, spoken and sung voice and perhaps a few other devices I did not see. I would very very very highly recomend you see her play.

Yaya teahouse put on amazing tea for the show, it was very nice. If you want to visit their website you can at www.yayateahouse.co.nz and then you can try some of their nice tea yourself.

We played at about 9pm..as usual we tried so hard to be prepared. But it never happens...

Some of the piano accordian parts Ben learnt disapeared from his brain and the glockenspeil was nowhere to be seen..I also forgot completely how to play the last song...

But most of the songs turned out quite nicely..We have a new song currently called 'Better than some' which I am quite pleased with.. I think it sounds a bit like a portishead song, but you can tell me what you think once we put it on the new album.

Hello.

So we have our first show back in New Zealand today at The Great Hall..(October 11th)
We are having a last practice this afternoon as we have added in new harmonies, piano accordian, Glockenspeil, percussion and violin plucks.

Hopefully we can play everything properly tonight! We have been having practices at Tui's beautiful little cottage in the courtyard. Yesterday she made us iced peppermint tea while we were playing which was great..
There was also a little aeroplane zooming around in the sky advertising one of the political parties...

We go up to Wellington on the Ferry next week to sort out bits and pieces for recording...Ah! We are considering putting  electric guitars, mandolin, synths, organs, drums, therimen and other assorted things on the next album..
Should be interesting.

Have a nice day..
here is a picture of a dwarf seahorse.
